It was really great to be able to start college with all of my generals completed. I could focus on my major right away. It also made it easy for me to get a job while in college. I could say that I had two years of college under my belt and they wanted to hire me right away.

Dual enrollment enabled our two daughters to save over $60,000 combined, shaving off two years of time toward their bachelor’s degrees. They were also notably more prepared for college than most freshman/sophomore students because they learned the rhythm and expectations of college work during high school. It’s like the best kept secret out there for parents of high school students!

My daughter started taking DE classes in her junior year of high school paid for by the school district. By the time she graduated from our homeschool high school, she only needed 5 semesters at the university to finish her BA. She graduated with a BA in psychology at age 20 with money in the bank.

Our son was always interested in Engineering. When he was a sophomore in high school, he began a program with the community college in pre-engineering. When he graduated from high school, he had already earned an Associate Degree, funded by the school district. He went on to a private college and earned his BA in Engineering. Because he had all his core requirements met, he was able to take a reduced class load (very helpful in Engineering) and take 4-5 trips abroad during his 4 years.

I never thought I could go to college. My parents were immigrants from Mexico and no one in my family had ever gone to college. I also knew they couldn’t afford to send me. When I was a freshman in high school, I thought I might want to go to college, so I started taking dual enrollment classes. After completing my first DE class, I no longer wondered if I could be successful in college. I knew I could be successful, and I had the credits to prove it. I applied for lots of scholarships and worked hard, and I recently finished my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice completely debt-free!

DE helped me in a multitude of ways. For one, I was able to experience a collegiate-level environment and get accustomed to how the teachers interacted with me. Furthermore, the classes were more open and engaging than a regular high school class. I was able to learn through discussions rather than redundant homework. There’s also no question about how advanced I became in comparison to my peers attending normal high school. I was at a much higher level of learning, and most importantly, I was treated like an adult – which is so underrated as an incremental element in teaching teenagers how to be an adult. I’m so glad I was able to figure out my niche while I was in high school, instead of wasting credits or money in college while navigating career concentrations. DE definitely gave me a leg up, and I look forward to a culture that normalizes college-level education at a high school age.
